The CUTTING EDGE of Low Technology

wind turbine seminar turbine and silo

Our hands-on homebrew wind turbine building seminar in Wisconsin in May was a blast for all involved! Three different wind turbines were built by 16 students in 6 days -- a 10 foot diameter machine that we flew on the last day of the seminar, a 12 foot machine, and a 17 foot machine. The seminar was sponsored by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) and was held at wind power guru Mick Sagrillo's workshop. Go HERE for the roundup and photos.

UPCOMING WIND TURBINE CONSTRUCTION SEMINARS

There's nothing better than 'hands-on' experience when you tackle the big project of building your first wind turbine and tower. We (and others) do offer in-depth, hands-on seminars at various locations around the USA. We also offer seminars at our wind turbine shop in Colorado, and we can travel to your location. Contact us for more information.

Thank you for dropping by!

We are a group of alternative energy enthusiasts who want to spread the message that It's EASY to make your own power FROM SCRATCH. Otherpower.com's headquarters is located in a remote part of the Northern Colorado mountains, 12 miles past the nearest power pole or phone line. All of our houses and shops run on only solar, wind, water and generator power...not because we are trying to make some sort of political or environmental statement, but because these are the only options available. And we refuse to move to town.

We could never have made it to our current level of electrification up here without the help of friends, neighbors--and folks we've never met, thanks to the internet. Our goal is to share our information about experimental successes and failures alike, free of charge, with anyone who is interested. We also offer a wide selection of books and hard-to-find alternative energy parts and components on our web Shopping Cart. We hope you find our pages informative, useful and enjoyable!

OUR NEWEST PAGE

Slow-speed Listeroid Diesel Generator with 2kw Axial Flux Alternator
Slow-speed Listeroid Diesel Generator with 2kw Axial Flux Alternator
This new page details the excellent generator we use for backup battery-charging power at our wind turbine shop. It's extremely quiet, sips fuel instead of gulping it, and sports a new homebrewed axial-flux alternator. We are extremely pleased with how this new system and alternator have worked out, and we can provide the alternator for purchase if you have a similar engine.

OUR NEWEST PRODUCT

Complete Wind Turbine Kits
Complete wind turbine kits
We are now offering a complete wind turbine kit. It includes a welded frame and tail, completely assembled alternator, all hardware, and a set of blades. All you have to do is mount the blades on the turbine, and mount the entire machine on your tower. We also offer a NEW "user's manual" for our 10-foot wind turbines, highly recommended reading no matter whose wind turbine you have. It details final assembly, towers, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

GREAT PAGE FOR NEWBIES

Designing a solar power system for a camping trailer
camping trailer, ready for small power system
This page thoroughly covers all the design considerations, equipment choices and installation procedures DanF used to install a tiny, inexpensive 40-watt solar power/battery/inverter system in his camping and fishing trailer. It's a great reference for learning the basics of sizing and purchasing a renewable energy system of any size and scale.

GREAT PAGE FOR EXPERIMENTERS

Wood-Fired Steam Engine 2kw Backup Battery Charger
Wood fired steam engine backup battery charger
We always have lots of work to do in the wind turbine shop, but it's OK to have some FUN now and then isn't it? We recently got this vintage steam engine running, and built a 2kw axial-flux alternator for it. It's a great backup battery charger for the shop, and allows us to say "We get our electricity from firewood!" Plus it's a heck of a lot of fun to run! You can hear the steam whistle from 2 miles away when we get a full head of steam built up and start making power.

Make Your Power From Scratch!

SAFETY NOTE: Some of the experiments described on our pages may present various hazards. Please be cautious. We are not responsible for injury resulting from neglecting safety precautions when performing experiments.
